Seeing Yes at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester in 1972 started a lifelong passion for progressive rock
I’m passionate about making music! I’ve been inspired by so many greats since my first concert on the 8th September 1971 – Cat Stevens. And then I was so fortunate to see rock giants Yes and Pink Floyd in 1972, Emerson Lake and Palmer and Jethro Tull in 1973 as well as folk icons James Taylor and Ralph McTell – both of whom I’ve seen many times. It was such a great time for music.
In 1976 I played guitar in a couple of rock cover bands and then my first ‘serious’ band in 1977, Heartsong, a folk harmony band performing covers and our own material that toured the club circuit until 1979. We had some success, even made an album. And then work got in the way.
My passion for music never diminished though. Fast forward to the 1990s and the Atari ST. I was writing and making music again using an early version of Cubase, synced to a Yamaha MT4X multitrack cassette recorder, and a great collection of synths I wish I had now.
It was also in the 1990s that my interest in world music developed. I had the opportunity to travel extensively around the world and the music and culture of the numerous countries I visited fascinated me– and back in the UK I continued to feed my interest in world music with many visits to Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD festival in Reading.
And so, here we are today with my latest musical initiative – the ffusion project. World music, progressive rock and ambient rock combined. My two musical passions fused together into one new whole. Making the music is a joy – hopefully you’ll hear that joy when you listen to it.
